Hello and welcome to Room 21! I am excited to be back in the Pilbara and continuing your child’s learning journey at Cassia Primary School.
Our Literacy Blocks build key skills in writing (including spelling) and reading and occurs each morning. Your child’s spelling focus will be targeted at their own level and is supported by dictation tasks to help them apply their spelling knowledge. Talk for Writing continues to be implemented to enhance writing skills. Our first two text types for the year are persuasive writing, which supported students to write their student leadership applications, and narrative writing, where we will be diving into wishing tales. These two text types also feature in NAPLAN writing, so tackling them first will increase student confidence for what can be stressful time.
Prime continues to be used for Mathematics as this is an evidence-based program that has seen great results since being introduced. Are first few units will focus on important number concepts that will establish a solid foundation for future learning. Early topics will include factors and multiples, multiplication of larger numbers and division. One area we are all working on improving is our basic multiplication facts (sometimes called timestables). Each Mathematics lesson will have time set aside to learn strategies to master these facts as well as reviewing recent content to keep knowledge fresh in our classes’ mind.
Of course, Room 21 continue with specialist subject areas in Indonesian, Science, Art, PE and Music. An exciting addition this year is Dance! As part of the The Arts curriculum will be learning the Elements of Dance as well as battling the other Senior classes in an epic Dance showdown.
Cassia Primary School uses Positive Behaviour Support with school wide lessons designed around the focus which changes weekly. In addition to Greenies, Room 21 uses a “money” reward system where students earn paper money to buy rewards such as using the teacher’s chair or getting to change who they sit with for the day.
If you would like to discuss the progress of your child, please contact myself through Seesaw or the front office and I will call to arrange an interview as soon as possible and will be conducted over the phone.
