Room 21

Room 21 – Year 5 – Mr Matthew Ullrich

Hello and welcome to Room 21!

In Term 3 we are focusing on several different topics and have quite a few exciting events going on.

In literacy, a large focus for our talk for writing unit is on creating suspenseful narratives using literary strategies such as onomatopoeia and dramatic connectives, to create an overwhelming feeling of tension! A big focus of ours is also on our PLD spelling, with a wide range of sounds adjusted for the needs of our diverse students. Within Talk for Reading, we are building our toolkit on how to make inferences within text types.

Within our maths block, we are focusing on 3D shapes, with both nets and volume. In addition to 3D shapes, we will soon begin to tackle decimals and eventually angles later this term, which are all being supported by our PRIME maths program.

The pedagogical focus, or the teaching style, within Room 21 is using Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI). This kind of teaching strategy is extremely effective at addressing the reduction of in-school variability and supports student engagement and learning with the students being at the centre of everything we do at Cassia.

Now in Room 21 we are researching and learning about the importance of sustainability within one’s country and one world. Recently we started a project to discover the different ways that the world has begun to heal ever since the recent COVID-19 outbreak, and the students have all begun to appreciate their surroundings from a new perspective.
