Staff & Students - Room 8

Miss Emily Ager

Year 1 in Room 8 with Miss Ager

Welcome to Room 8 with Miss Ager. For the families of our amazing Room 8 students, we are now up on Seesaw, so you can see the fantastic work your child gets up to in the classroom.

At Cassia we implement the ‘Talk for Writing’ (T4W) literacy program. This program is based on the principles of how children learn, and uses use story boards, imitation and actions (amongst other things) to incorporate all types of learning (visual, auditory, reading/writing, kinaesthetic) to scaffold the students in their writing. The first topic has been poetry using the “I Really Like Goats” song by The Wiggles. We have now moved on to narrative writing, using ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff” as the model text and having a focus on character description. After that we will be looking at non-fiction texts. We will be following the whole school approach by using the PLD Diana Rigg synthetic phonics program for Spelling.

In Mathematics this term we will focus on learning numbers to 100- representing them, ordering, and place value. We will also look at durations of time- days of the week, months of the year, 2D shapes, patterns and the likelihood and outcomes of familiar events.

HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences)

This semester we are focussing on History, with the topic being ‘Present and past family life’. We will start the term by discussing our own family structures and how it differs to other families. We will then move on to find out how families and daily life has changed from our parents’ and grandparents’ times.

This year we also have a classroom ‘pet’ called Sam the Sloth. Each weekend a responsible student will be picked from the 100% attendees for that week to take Sam home for a weekend adventure. You may write or draw in Sam’s adventure book with your child, and don’t forget to bring Sam back to school on Monday!

Homework this term will be the homereader books and sightwords. Your child will also bring home their Mathletics login details to complete tasks when they are required to.

Looking forward to a great year with you all!
