Staff & Students - Room 21

Room 21 - Year 6 - Miss Kellie Mills

Welcome to Room 21, my name is Miss Kellie Mills and I have the pleasure of teaching the straight Year 6 class with Mrs George Cartwright. Year 6 is a very exciting and eventful year, with camp, graduation and orientation being the biggest events. However Year 6 is also a very important year, as it is the last year of Primary School. Room 21 students are the leaders of the school and will lead by example inside and outside the classroom.

I would like to inform you of the variety of topics and concepts that we will be covering in the following learning areas. If you have any questions or wish to make a time to meet with me please feel free to through Seesaw. I look forward to a wonderful and productive year.

Our Literacy Blocks start with levelled groups working with one of the three senior teachers using the Diana Rigg spelling program. After spelling students complete daily handwriting and grammar lessons. It is our goal that every student practices their reading on a daily basis. I have therefore set up a guided reading program in which students read in levelled groups with the teacher to improve fluency and complete set task to improve comprehension. Students are also encouraged to read at home every night for homework. Students will be planning, rehearsing and presenting oral speeches throughout the term and completing two Talk For Writing units a term, one focussing on Fiction and the other on Non-Fiction.

In our Numeracy Blocks, students will complete warm up’s, where they build up their automaticity skills, increase vocabulary, and consolidate concepts covered, be explicitly taught strategies to problem solve and given multiple opportunities to apply these strategies to their learning. In Number we will be focussing on using mental and written strategies to solve complex problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and the different types of whole numbers and how to locate these on a number line. In Measurement and Geometry we will be constructing 3D shapes and learning to identify the properties of pyramids and prisms. In Statistics and Probability we will be conducting chance experiments with both small and large numbers, describing outcomes using fractions, decimals and percentages and observing frequencies.

Other Learning Areas

In Digital Technologies students are investigating digital systems and networks. In Design and Technology students are learning about the principles of food preparation. In HASS we are starting with History and focussing on Australia’s Federation. Mrs Penny Squibb will take Room 21 for Health.

Special Needs Education Assistant - Mrs George Cartwright

Hello, my name is Mrs. Cartwright and I am a Special Needs Education Assistant at Cassia Primary School.

This year I am in Room 21 with the Year 6 students and I will support the class and Miss Mills to help ensure they reach their full potential.

As an EA I support students individually as well as in groups using the Mini-Lit and Reading Tutor Program. These focus on letter sounds recognition and blending which is the foundation of a confident and fluent reader.
